Introduction to Music Technology

Course Target Market
This program has been designed for participants who are looking to learn more about recording or making music. This course suits anyone with an interest in music from singer-songwriters to those who want to learn how to produce genres of dance music. The course can act as a foundation course for entry into related third-level programs.

Entry Requirements
Participants must have Windows experience. Access to a computer out of class time is recommended.

Qualification
Participants will be awarded the Certificate in Introduction to Music Technologies from City & Guilds on satisfactory completion of the course and related assignments.

Total Course Time
18 hours tutored training - 3 hours per week for six weeks. Participants should allow a further 3 hours per week for assignment / revision.

Course Description
This course aims to give an introduction to the world of music making/recording and is taught by professionals currently working in the industry. Topics covered include:

  • Recording live instruments/voice using analog and digital systems
  • Radio production/presentation
  • Computer music (using software including Cubase SE, Reason and Sound Forge)
  • Setting up your own project studio
  • Studio Practices
  • Hardware & Software effects

Course Outline

Radio
Understanding the basic concepts and equipment used in a radio broadcast. Students are introduced to: mixing consoles, microphones, different types of connections and audio playback equipment. Students participate in producing a short radio program.

Analogue Recording
Basic Analogue Signal Flow and Recording. Students are introduced to the basic recording process using a small multi-track recorder and then a professional 24-channel mixing console. Students are given an overview of analogue signal flow and make some recordings.

Analogue Recording Continued & Live Sound
Students are shown how to set up effects on a professional mixing desk and are shown how different types of instruments are recorded. Students are also introduced to the different types of microphones and other equipment used in typical studio setups. Participants are then introduced to live performance equipment.

Digital Audio
Students are given an overview of digital audio production and begin editing using Sound Forge software. Participants are also introduced to software and hardware samplers and digital effects. Students begin making their own recordings using the professional audio production package Cubase. This section of the course also covers soundcards and basic digital signal flow. Students learn how to access the writing/production features of Cubase.

Introduction to Reason
Students begin working with Propellerhead's Reason.
Setting up home/project studios.
