Course Target Market
This course has been designed for participants who are looking to learn more about applications of digital technology within traditional film and video production. The course will involve the development, production and edit of a short film, with participants working in small groups.
Entry Requirements
Participants must have Windows experience.
Access to a computer out of class time is recommended
Qualification
Participants, on satisfactory completion of the course and any related assignments, will be awarded a Certificate in Digital Video and Online Broadcasting from City & Guilds.
Total Course Time
18 hours tutored training - 3 hours per week for six weeks. Participants should allow a further 3 hours per week for assignment / revision.
Course Description
On completion of the course, participants will be familiar with pre-production, production and post-production - the requirements for a digital film.
Course Outline
Introduction to digital video production and online broadcasting tools and techniques.
Participants will view best practice online films and animated audiovisual materials. Camera and sound equipment will also be introduced at this time.
Rules for shooting video for online broadcast.
Participants will be introduced to the correct film script and storyboard formats and will begin developing ideas for a 3 minute short film.
The Camera & Sound Recording
Lenses. Manipulating angle of view.
Camera formats.
Working with tripod/handheld.
Participants will shoot and view footage.
Special emphasis to be placed on framing, movement, shot size and controlling audio levels.
Participants will be asked to continue with the development of their scripts. These scripts will be pitched to the rest of the class, with one script to be selected for production.
Sound Recording with digital audio recorder.
Digital audio recorders.
Microphones - universal/rifle/tie-mikes. Participants will use the following equipment to record and playback sound - portable Roland R-44 digital recorder and professional rifle mike/radio mikes. Participants will also consider audio-post issues such as effects work and creating off-screen sounds.
Production
Based on the script and storyboard produced earlier in the course, participants will work together to shoot the short film.
All production facilities will be provided by the college.
Adobe Premiere
Participants will begin to learn digital video editing techniques using Adobe Premiere - the digital post-production tool.

The footage from the short film will be captured and students will develop there own 'edit' in class, adding titles, and exporting the movie for DVD.

Compressing video and audio - MPEG, MP4
Export options - data rates, file format, frame size, frames-per-sec
Students will finish their edits with guidance from the tutor.
Export options will be discussed and the use of compression demonstrated.
Students will export a print of their edit and using Adobe Encore encode this onto a playable DVD.
